Presidents’ Distinguished Club for 14 years since 1998!

Speakers’ Dream (Club No. #220) is one of the very first Toastmasters Club that was set up  in Peninsular Malaysia.

It’s previous name was IBBM Toastmasters Club (“Institut Bank-Bank Malaysia”) before it was renamed to Speakers’ Dream Toastmasters Club  and changed from being an internal club in an organization, to a community club to accept more members from diverse backgrounds.

Our club members consist of both working people and college students as well as family members who would like to practice together with their teenage children, with the same interest to polish up our speaking and leadership skills.

Division W International Speech & Table Topics Contest

This is indeed a day of break-though, not only old records were broken, new trophy was broken too!! (Seriously)…

Div W Governor, Marian Lee, ACG ALB

It was hot and sweaty on this Saturday afternoon, but no heat would tempt the Division W International Speech and Table Topics contestants to strip off their smart coats and ties, as they spiked up the heat competing for an opportunity to represent Division W in the upcoming District 51 contest.

If that wasn’t hot enough, our Area W5 Governor, John Cheah, ACG CL outshined in his bright yellow ‘Chinese samfu’. Kungfu master in the house!

Division W contest took place at Goldhill Club, Kepong from 1.00pm onwards on 17 March 2012, Saturday. I was very fortunate because the contest actually took place just next to my house, and I was eager to listen to quality speeches by contestants from Speakers’ Dream Toastmasters, MAICSA Toastmasters, HSBC Toastmasters, Sai Masters Toastmasters, and TTDI Toastmasters.

I was impressed with speakers like E Son Lee, who took life lessons out of the man without arms and legs, Nick Vujicic and laughed out loud with Lawrence Hoo’s rendition of the End of the World 2012.  Teo Soo Loon’s speech to ‘Smell the Roses’ taught us to appreciate living our life in its present moment, but it was Dominic Teoh who was the last speaker, actually combined all the contestants’ speech materials to make up his final interpretation on the “Meaning of Death”.

One speaker that actually caught my eye was Lee Han Sen from TTDI-TMC, who has grown so much out of the close mentorship he received from his club members. Vincent Hor actually told him last year, that he was confident he would win this year’s contest. And so it happened, he indeed won 1st place in the International Speech Contest with his speech “Not Good Enough”.

Table Topics soon followed after the good chicken curry lunch, and the following speakers: Lee Xi Wen, Guok Lee Lee, Dharma, E Son Lee and Mark Lee were surely unprepared to speak impromptu!

The topic that came up was “No Choice or Many Choices?”  No topic was tough as all Table Topic contestants breezed their way to get their message across as they decide which is better – having no choice or many choices. However, it was Mark Lee who came up with the best example: He tackled both sides of the topic, and he was the only one who did that compared to all the contestants.

That it was good not to have a choice, and it is also good to have many choices (albeit being single is also a choice), but he arrived at concluding that it’s making the best choice that matters the most.

Finally, the contest ended on a good note with no time disqualifications, and everyone was happy with the results that followed:

International Speech Contest:

1st Place: Lee Han Sen, ACB

2nd Place: Dominic Teoh, TM

3rd Place: Lawrence Hoo, ACS

Table Topics Contest:

1st Place: Mark Lee, CC

2nd Place: E Son Lee, ACB CL

3rd Place: Lee Xi Wen, ACG

Area W2 International Speech & Table Topics Contests 2012

Area W2 Toastmasters - Winners, contestants and guests up for a photo grab get-together. Notice they too are scared to go over the "line on the stage"!

Roaring Lions and Tiger Cubs

(written by Vincent Chow, ACB CL)

As Area W2 International Speech & Table Topics Contest kick off to a great start, with usual contenders who won in their respective Club-level contests such as heavyweights Speakers’ Dream Toastmasters and Great Eastern Toastmasters, this also marks the first time when contestants from TAR College Toastmasters, the ones who were once timid tiger cubs who has now grown more confident and are ready to mix in with the big boys and girls.

Area W2 Contest took place at the Great Eastern Office Block, 6th floor from 1PM onwards on 11 February, Saturday. At the same time, Great Eastern was organizing a Chinese New Year annual dinner for the staff and managers next door – The sounds of gong, laughter and CNY disco music clouded the somewhat quiet atmosphere of the contest, as the audience were putting in their fullest attention to listen to captivating speeches by the contestants. Even the CEO of Great Eastern, Dato Koh Yaw Hui dropped by! Dato Koh’s handsome batik shirt makes him the most eye-catching attention among the otherwise plain-looking and coat-hugging audience members like us!

As the trophies were right on the stage, it must be hard for the contestants not to resist doing their best, giving their all in the contests. The International Speech contestants go by as follows:-

International Speech Contest

1. ACS Lawrence Hoo (Speakers’ Dream)

2. TM Jeremy Phang (Speakers’ Dream)

3. TM Lee Yoong Wai (TAR College)

4. TM Michele Chang (TAR College)

5. TM Helen Too (Great Eastern)

6. TM Tan Yong Hao (Great Eastern)

Table Topics Contest was up next, and it was a tight competition between the contestants who spoke on a very long impromptu topic that somehow sounds convoluted, confusing and tongue-twisting but still captures the essence of any table topic – Interpret it in your own meaning and make it simpler using your own personal thoughts and experience. The message, if summarized, would be simply titled ‘Why Worry?’

Table Topics Contestants

1. CC Mark Lee (Speakers’ Dream)

2. TM Michele Chang (TAR College)

3. ACB, CL Vincent Chow (TAR College)

4. TM Jeremy Phang (Speakers’ Dream)

5. TM Jin Peng (Great Eastern)

6. TM Khoo Ai Vee (Great Eastern)

As soon as the contest excitement sizzles out, drumrolls rocked the hall as the results of the winners were finally announced. In the International Speech Contest – ACS Lawrence (1ST), TM Michele (2ND) and TM Jeremy (3RD), followed up by the Table Topics – TM Mark (1ST), ACB CL Vincent Chow (2ND) and TM Jin Peng (3RD).

The champions of both contests, Lawrence and Mark who are both from Speakers’ Dream, will be representing Area W2 in the next Division W-level contest on 17th March, Saturday at Goldhill Club, Kepong.

Good luck to both of them, and to all contestants, you are still a winner in our hearts, and we thank you for encouraging us to take great leaps to become wholesome again, and learning to see the bright side of life.

As Great Eastern motto roars – “Life is Great!”

Merry Christmas to Everyone!

From Speakers’ Dream Toastmasters Club,

Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall. We traditionally do this in my family by driving around the parking lot until we see a shopper emerge from the mall, then we follow her, in very much the same spirit as the Three Wise Men, who 2,000 years ago followed a star, week after week, until it led them to a parking space.

Perhaps the best Yuletide decoration is being wreathed in smiles.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Division W’s Humorous Speech Contest & Speech Evaluation Contest 2011

Winners and supporters gathered up for a close-up shot.

Lee Xi Wen won humorously, Dr. Devi Menon aced evaluation

Division W’s Humorous Speech & Evaluation Speech Contests ended on its highest note ever at Goldhill Club, Kepong on 24th September 2011, Saturday on 1.30PM.   With numerous contestants from pinnacle clubs like Sai Masters, KPMG, TTDI, MAICSA, Universiti Malaya, and our very own Speakers’ Dream, it’s not surprising to see an even larger audience as well, filled with supporters from the Toastmasters fraternity and even a few more curious guests interested to see first-hand how Toastmasters will be like by attending the contest.

Ironically, my scoop will only capture momentous highlights from the contest as I was not able to attend the contest, but I certainly made sure to catch up by the grapevines, and largely thanks to TAR College’s president, Eric Low’s and Jon Lim’s pictures and their observations.

Speakers’ Dream very own Darcy Steinhardt, who won double champ in Area W2 Contests, came up strong with baby Kalen and wife Chrissy Steinhardt cheering softly in the audience. He gave rare thoughtful jokes on ‘Conscious, Unconscious Stupidity’ for Humorous, and gave golden feedback on test speaker, Michael’s (HP Toastmasters) speech.  He then bagged two third place awards for both contests! Two is certainly always better than one for Darcy. Congratulations!

Darcy Steinhardt with baby Kalen and wife Chrissy.

Lee Xi Wen came out with nationalist flair, bringing a large Malaysian flag and waving it on stage, while cracking up political jokes that connect closely to every audience’s (unchangeable) way of life. I must have imagined people laughing so hard and falling down to the floor, for he won Champion in Humorous Speech Contest! He will be moving on to the next District Humorous Contest, and I’m expecting a tough competition like Stephen Fernando to give him a run for his money.

He was then followed by Amanda Wong, winning second place in Humorous as she jested about her body! Mirthful women must have burst out laughing, while desirous husbands or young men snickered listening to her self-deprecating jokes.

Lee Xi Wen from TTDI Toastmasters, won first place with his ala-Malaysian speech.

Amanda Wong from KPMG Toastmasters bagged 2nd place in Humorous.

In the evaluation contests, Xi Wen’s compatriot, See Tho Whye Kit won 2nd place with his clear cut evaluation. It must certainly be his joyous day as he received the coveted award after recently celebrated his birthday a few days ago. Excellent timing!

It was Dr. Devi Menon from Universiti Malaya Toastmasters won 1st place with her expressionism and professionalism in her evaluation. She will also be representing Division W for the upcoming District 51 Evaluation Contest in Malacca too.

See Tho won 2nd place in Evaluation Contest.

Dr. Devi Menon won 1st place in Evaluation Contest.

Be prepared to venture out into the Heritage City of Malacca on 23rd October 2011 to see an even more exciting District 51 Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contests, the highest level of the competition.
